Save on insurance costs

It can feel daunting to find coverage that fits both your needs and your budget. But here are three ways you could save on insurance costs without skimping on coverage:

Combining insurance policies could save you money. Insurance companies often offer discounts for bundling your homeowners or renters insurance with your car insurance. It’s worth asking!

If you’re open to shopping around, an independent insurance agent can help you compare competitive quotes from multiple insurance companies at the same time.

Hint: Dupaco’s independent insurance agency leverages the credit union membership to offer members additional insurance discounts!

You might qualify for other insurance-related discounts if:

  • You added home safety features like an alarm system or deadbolts.
  • Your vehicle has safety features or an alarm system.
  • You’re a military veteran.
  • Your youthful driver has a decent academic record.
  • You have an excellent driving record.
  • You drive significantly less than you used to.
  • You completed a defensive driving or safety course.

Questions
Confused by auto and homeowners insurance? We have answers.

We get it—insurance can be complicated. But fret not! Our team of insurance experts have answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

With any insurance, you’ll pay a monthly, annual or bi-annual premium to your insurance provider. Your plan will also include a deductible (the amount of money you’ll pay out of pocket if you make a claim). Typically, the lower your insurance deductible, the higher your premium will be. Here are the main categories of auto insurance:

  • Liability coverage: Includes coverage for bodily injuries or property or auto damage to another motorist if you’re at fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage: Helps pay for damage and losses to your car that weren’t caused by another vehicle (like hail, deer and floods).
  • Personal injury protection: Helps cover medical bills for you and your passengers in an accident.
  • Collision insurance: Helps cover damages to your car in an accident (or a collision with something else that wasn’t falling, flying or an animal).
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist protection: Helps pay for damages caused by another motorist who doesn’t have sufficient insurance coverage.
  • Gap insurance: Helps pay the difference between what you owe on a financed or leased vehicle and what the car is valued at if it’s a total loss.

You’ll typically choose from one of these options:

  • Actual cash-value plan: Only offers payouts to cover what the damaged item was worth at the time of the disaster.
  • Replacement-cost plan: Helps pay for the full cost of replacing your damaged or stolen belongings up to a predetermined amount. This plan offers more robust coverage, but the premiums are generally higher. If you have a mortgage, this policy will be required.

A replacement cost plan will help you get back on your feet sooner after a disaster. And the actual cash value plan would be appropriate if you don’t plan to rebuild or replace your home in the event of a loss. The perfect plan for you will depend on your budget and savings, the value of your home and belongings, and the price you put on having true peace of mind.

You can opt for the minimum required by state law, maximum coverage or any amount in between. Your goal is to find the sweet spot that offers you enough coverage for your unique needs without overpaying for more protection than you need. Here are some tips to keep in mind for auto insurance:

  • Vehicle’s value: If your vehicle is no longer worth a lot, a high deductible probably doesn’t make sense. Your vehicle’s value is likely close to the amount you would have to pay to repair it.
  • Your drive time: If you drive an excessive amount or in high-traffic areas, you might want more coverage. Both factors increase your car’s risk of damage.
  • Teen drivers: Will children be driving your car? If a teenager drives your car, it’s a good idea to increase your coverage.

Here are more tips to help you choose the right insurance deductible for you, including how to calculate what you would save (or not save) with a higher insurance deductible.

Unfortunately, “full coverage” doesn’t really exist. The term wrongly implies that your car insurance policy covers everything. But if you’d like more protection for your vehicle, you’ll want physical damage coverage. It includes collision and comprehensive coverage:

  • Collision coverage: Helps cover damages to your car in an accident (or a collision with something else that wasn’t falling, flying or an animal).
  • Comprehensive coverage: Helps pay for damage and losses to your car that weren’t caused by another vehicle (like hail, deer and floods).

It depends. If you’re using an independent insurance agent (like Dupaco Insurance Services), the agent will quote several insurance companies at the same time for you. But if you’re not working with an independent agent, it’s best to get two other quotes so you can compare your options.

If you’re a Dupaco Insurance Services member, you can file your claim here. And these step-by-step resources can help you know what to do in case of an accident or disaster:

  • If you’ve been in a car accident, these tips can help you know what steps to take next.
  • If your home has been damaged by a natural disaster, these tips can help you know what to expect during the claims process.
Pet Insurance
Peace of mind for your furry friend

In addition to homeowners and auto insurance, we also offer Figo Pet Insurance for the dogs and cats in your family. This special coverage can help make pricey vet bills and medical treatments more affordable. And you can get quotes and file claims on your own right here! Questions? Here’s what you can expect with this coverage:

How does pet insurance work?

Pet insurance is an optional insurance policy that charges a monthly or annual premium to help cover eligible medical expenses. With Figo, you can file your claims from any device to get money back on eligible expenses. Hint: Unlike human health insurance, pet parents can typically go to the veterinarian of their choice without having to worry about finding an “in-network” professional!

What does pet insurance cover?

Figo Pet Insurance covers all illnesses and injuries—including cancer, hip dysplasia and hereditary and congenital conditions—if they were not pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is any condition that shows clinical signs prior to the start of your policy period and relevant waiting period. Hint: It’s best to enroll your pets in a policy while they’re still healthy to improve their chances of being fully covered if something happens later.

What's not included in pet insurance?

Pre-existing conditions aren’t covered by most pet insurance providers, including Figo. But you can still insure a pet with a pre-existing condition. Their coverage will just exclude those specific ailments and conditions related to the pre-existing condition. Figo also doesn’t cover experimental procedures, cloning procedures, cosmetic surgery or breeding, pregnancy and birth.

Does pet insurance cover vaccines?

Figo’s optional wellness and preventative care coverage provides money back for annual exams, vaccines, diagnostic tests and more! You’ll need to refer to your policy for complete details regarding coverage, limitations and exclusions.
