To many people, retirement provides an opportunity to relax and reflect, to take a breath and downshift.

Over the past five years, Bob and Marilyn Hoefer have turned that idea on its head.

The Hoefers have instead shifted their philanthropic efforts into a new gear, putting their money and time toward making the world a better place. That mindset and their dedication to community drove Bob and Marilyn Hoefer’s selection for the 48th annual Telegraph Herald First Citizen Award.

In 2012, around the time Bob retired as president and CEO at Dupaco Community Credit Union, he and Marilyn provided the seed money for a foundation that aims to help those facing sudden and unexpected financial hardships. The Dupaco R.W. Hoefer Foundation has provided more than $525,000 to more than 450 individuals over the course of the past five years.
