Apple Pay

When will Dupaco's payment cards be available to members within Apple Pay?
Dupaco's VISA credit card is already available in Apple Pay. As of April 2017, Dupaco's debit EMV MoneyCard is compatible with Apple Pay.

In basic terms, how will my Apple iPhone allow me to make payments?
The answer to this is multifaceted.

  • The iPhone 6, 6 Plus, and newer models are equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC). That technology allows phone users to communicate with payment terminals that display the contactless communication icon.  Retailers wishing to accept Apple Pay will need to have a payment terminal that accepts “contactless” payments.
  • Apple Pay will also introduce the use of biometric identification for payments to improve payment security.
  • Apple Pay, in combination with the card brands (Visa, MasterCard, etc), will offer tokenization. These one-time tokens are created for every transaction meaning that sensitive card data is not provided to merchants nor stored on the phone device. When a transaction occurs, this token is sent to the payment processors where under significant security the token is matched to the actual card number conducting the transaction. Thus, Apple Pay will reduce card numbers moving back and forth between phones, merchants, and payment processors.

Should I trust this technology?
As we have observed in the past several years, card breaches are often the result of malicious malware infecting a retailer’s computer system. With tokenization, merchants no longer store card information reducing the likelihood of widespread card compromises. Tokenization coupled with biometric authorization offer new security tools to minimize the risk of card information falling into the wrong hands.

Are the transaction amounts through Apple Pay or near field communication (NFC) limited to a small dollar amount?
Yes. At the present time card issuers have limited purchases to $25 and $50 depending on the card brand. However, it is anticipated that as popularity of this product grows the limits could be increased.

Will this add time to my check out?
In testing, Apple has been able to demonstrate electronic payment via smart phone is faster and more efficient than a traditional card swipe.

How much will it cost me to use Apple Pay?
At this time, Dupaco does not plan to charge members a fee for using Apple Pay.

How many businesses are equipped to accept Apple Pay via NFC?
At the present time there are over 220,000 stores accepting contactless NFC payments. That number will continue to grow as the popularity of Apple Pay and other NFC products take hold.

Do Apple Pay transactions post the same as credit cards do today?
Card transactions on Apple Pay will post much the same way transactions do today. There are a variety of security layers in place (associated with the card number tokenization) but items will still post to your monthly account statements.

What if I do not have an iPhone 6 or other approved Apple device. Can my Android device work with Apple Pay?
As it stands today, Apple Pay may only be used on Apple iPhone 6, 6 Plus, or newer models.
