How Do I Become a Member?
You simply open a share savings account with $25 or more. You become a “member” of a credit union (as opposed to a mere “customer” at a traditional bank), because you are actually joining a not-for-profit organization. As a member/owner, you are entitled to vote on credit union actions and take responsibility for credit union decisions. In return, you will enjoy low loan rates and service fees, high rates of return, and many features and benefits. And as long as you're eligible for membership, you can even open an account online, right now!
Who can join?
You are eligible to join Dupaco Community Credit Union if you live or work in Allamakee, Benton, Buchanan, Cedar, Clayton, Clinton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Iowa, Jackson, Johnson, Jones, Linn, Scott, or Winneshiek counties in Iowa; Crawford, Grant, Iowa, or Lafayette counties in Wisconsin; or Carroll, Jo Daviess, Rock Island, Stephenson, and Whiteside counties in Illinois.

More than 50,000— and counting. Will I always be a member?
Yes. Once a member/owner, always a member/owner. You can retire, change jobs, or move across the country and still remain a member—as long as you keep at least $25 in your share savings account. In addition, once you become a
member/owner, your immediate family members have automatic eligibility, even if they live or work outside of the counties previously listed. What’s a cooperative?
A financial cooperative, such as Dupaco, is organized for the objectives of:
• Providing financial services at fair and reasonable rates and fees.
• Encouraging responsible financial activity and thrift.
• Allowing members/owners to use and control money for the mutual benefit of all Dupaco members, the credit union itself, and the tri-state community at large. By contrast, a for-profit corporation such as a bank has been organized for the objectives of generating profit and providing dividends for a small, elite group of shareholders. At Dupaco, all member/owners are shareholders—so all reap benefits. Incidentally, you’ll be interested to know that approximately $80 of every $100 you deposit is loaned back
out to other members, completing the Dupaco cooperative circle and enhancing the lives of other tri-state residents. Where’s the Dupaco headquarters?
In Dubuque, Iowa. And that’s where it will stay. Dupaco also operates numerous full-service locations throughout the tri-state area and several additional freestanding ATMs. For ATM locations click here. In addition, you can access our online branch from anywhere in the world. Who says Dupaco is great?
While our members, staff, and board of directors will vouch for Dupaco’s positive attributes, others have also lauded your credit union.
Superior rating for safety. For many consecutive years, Florida-based Bauer Financial Reports has awarded Dupaco top honors. This means your credit union continues to be one of the strongest and safest in the United States. And that’s
no accident. At Dupaco, we continue to be proactive and strive to do the best job we can—so that our members, like you, benefit. Community involvement and philanthropic awards. As we like to say, “community” is our middle name. Literally. And helping the communities we serve to become even better places to work and play continues to be one of our main objectives. Dupaco Community Credit Union has been frequently recognized for community involvement, with several prestigious awards to our name. Top ratings by state and federal regulators. Dupaco consistently receives the highest possible ratings from independent examiners for quality, and from state and federal regulators for capital adequacy, asset quality, management, earnings, and liquidity. Awards for outstanding communication. At Dupaco, it is our goal to communicate effectively with our members through newsletters, brochures, and more. Our efforts have been recognized nationally and locally. How much is Dupaco worth?
Dupaco maintains millions of dollars in its reserve—which is your safety net. In addition, assets and owner deposits have both been on the rise. And that means more money is available for you and other members to borrow for a new home, car, or whatever you need. It’s inevitable– we pay taxes, too.
Taxes are a part of life, and even not-for-profit credit unions like Dupaco have to pay. As a member-owned cooperative, Dupaco is taxed differently than for-profit institutions. But rest assured, Dupaco pays taxes like everybody else. We’re taxed on our reserves, property, and real estate. In addition, we pay sales and employer related taxes. Policy makers tax credit unions differently than banks because our sole mission is to serve our members. Our excess earnings, after reserve requirements are met, are applied to lower interest on loans, higher returns on savings, fewer fees, and new product and service offerings requested by members. Bank profits, on the other hand, are paid to shareholders. Anything else?
